Week 6

Chapter 6

Sustainable Design

Hello and welcome back to our blog! We'll be revisiting the activities that we have done for chapter 6 of ICPD for this week's blog. Let's get started

First up Mr. Ting briefed us on the product design considerations. He went through the basics of product design considerations such as coming up with sustainable design strategies with the likes of factors such as environmental, social, and economic impact taken into consideration. Some of the design strategies would be recyclability, reusability, repairability, and efficiency. Next up, Mr. Ting went through some generic design considerations with examples of real-life situations that relate to the respective design considerations. Mr. Ting then explained the six stages of the product cycle; extraction, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, use, and disposal.

We were then assigned to create a product cycle of our own which was centered around the chemical product that we chose to do during week 1.

Following would be the picture of our product cycle:

We then moved on to the second part of the lesson which was cradle-to-cradle design. Mr. Ting went through the process behind the cradle-to-grave system at first following the cradle-to-cradle system. He explained how much of a better approach cradle-to-cradle design is compared to the cradle-to-grave system. We then looked at some of the products that were invented based on the cradle-to-cradle system for instance the Holonite Zilver and the Bayonix Bottle.

Before wrapping up the lesson we were assigned to implement the cradle-to-cradle concept to our product cycle.

Following would be the picture of our product cycle based on the C2C system:

Well, that's it for our week 6 blog see you guys again on week 7. Adios amigos!✌
