The sub-bitter head start
Greetings to our readers who are reading our blogs currently. This is our first time, as a team of Hendrik, Dhevesh, Amal and I, who will be embarking on our journey as fellow Singapore Polytechnic Students (SP) in the course of our module "CP5065: Introduction the Chemical Product and Design". We were first greeted with our Module Lecturer: Mr Kok Eng Ting, as he guides us in the module overview of our new module.
Mr Kok shares with us the purpose in this entire module: "To provide you with the best of both worlds as we expose you to both process designs and plant designs". This module was prepared just so to provide us with an introductory insight into the types of skills that we will need to equip ourselves with and prepares us for the demand of future workforce.
Meanwhile, we get to choose our new teammates to get along for the rest of not only the whole module term, but also for the entire semesters of Year 2. Previously as first year students, we got along with the entire class. And now, we will be enticing our journey with the four of us.
And here we are, doing icebreakers and sharing our interests with one another as a safe matter of approach before tackling on the module for the rest of the semester. As long as we are strong at the start, we can at least finish strong at the end.

An eye opener!
Our team took a seat and came out with ideas of what our future work skills with be like compared to the past, the present and the future. We may be dealing with Covid-19, as well as a global team countering it with a vaccine. Maybe one day, we might even be a global team to find out a cure of cancer! They're big dreams, but there are endless possibilities of our modern world right now; with the rising Artificial Intelligence (AI) machines, new media ecology and even having a globally-connected world.
Furthermore, we were shared about the CDIO Framework: To Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate. Using this framework, we get to experience a glimpse of what a structured plan would look like for our future designs and projects, such as our final year of our capstone project! It got us thinking in our sense of approach, to plan on what's ahead and to tackle the competencies of our course in Chemical Engineering!

Our first team mini assignment
Here's our first assignment! After learning about different kinds and categories of chemical products, such as micro-structured products like crabsticks as a consumable food and chemical devices to accomplish a chemical transformation, we were tasked to identify a chemical product. We proposed products like an air conditioner, which are household appliances and electronics that has a chemical engineering principle of a condenser that cools air and compressor to increase the pressure of air and transport them to our rooms, just so that the temperature of the room decreases.
After the assignment, we processed information on how this simple task can lead up to a semester long project for our capstone. Where each individual steps we had to think about the air conditioner is split into our CDIO framework.
With that, our first week of the module come to a halt as we have seen and learnt a new paradigm of chemical engineering which leads to the
importance of chemical engineers being trained and skillful in chemical
product design. I can't wait to see how we can progress through as a team! We start strong. Let's finish the module strong together!
